Event Study

Pick an event, like Nifty 50 falling 4% in a week, and see what happened next every past time since 2016, compared with a normal week.

About the Event Study

Every big fall, new high or cheap valuation feels unique while it is happening. This event study looks back at every past time the same thing happened to an NSE index and shows what the index did over the next month, 3 months, 6 months and year.

Pick an index, an event (a sharp weekly fall, a drop from the 52-week high, a losing streak, a sharp rally, a new high, a cross of the 40-week average, or a P/E extreme) and its size. Each past time is drawn as a line from the event week, with the average path and a normal week shown for comparison, and every occurrence is listed in a table.

It uses weekly NSE index closes since 2016. Small samples are flagged, because a handful of past cases is a rough guide, not a rule.

Common questions

What happens after Nifty falls 4% or more in a week?

Open the Event Study and pick Nifty 50 with a 4% weekly fall: it lists every such week since 2016 with what Nifty did 1, 3, 6 and 12 months later, compared with a normal week.

What is an event study?

An event study collects every past time something happened, such as a sharp fall, and measures what came next on average and in each case. It shows how often a pattern led to higher prices, not a promise that it will again.

Why compare with a normal week?

Markets tend to rise over time, so a good average after an event means little on its own. The page shows what happened after any week too, so you can see whether the event really changed the odds.
